Moldovan Parliament repealed the scheme of providing Moldovan citizenship in return for investments. The respective amendments have been passed by Parliament and will become effective from 01 September 2020.
The legislative framework which provided the possibility for obtaining Moldovan citizenship in exchange for investments made by foreign citizens into the country’s economy was introduced at the end of 2016 and became effective in 2017. It set out the following main conditions for claiming citizenship of Moldova in return for investments:
- a non-refundable contribution of at least EUR 100.000 into the Long Term Public Investments Fund (+ EUR 15.000 for each family member, but not more than EUR 155.000 for the whole family);
- maintaining investments of at least EUR 250.000 in one of the areas of strategic development for a period of not less than 60 months.
However, after the new Government had come to power in June 2019, the whole scheme was first suspended, and now, after lengthy debates, it has been completely repealed.
